Attendance Policy UEIS aims to maximize attendance rates in order to ensure that all students are able to take fullest advantage of the learning experiences available to them.
The school is obliged to differentiate between authorised and unauthorized absences. A letter or telephone message from a parent does not in itself authorize an absence. Only if the school is satisfied as to the validity of the explanation offered by the letter/message will the absence be authorised. Improving attendance at UEIS is the responsibility of everyone in the school community, including pupils, parents and staff.
Pupils
All pupils are expected to attend school and all of their lessons regularly and punctually. Pupils who experience difficulties will be offered prompt and sympathetic support, initially from their form tutor. At the end of each semester, pupils whose attendance is either very good or improved will be presented with awards.
Parents
Parents are responsible for ensuring that their child attends school regularly, punctually, properly dressed and equipped; and in a fit condition to learn. If a child is prevented for any reason from attending, or is late, parents are requested to notify the school as soon as possible, either in writing, which is preferred, or by telephone call. A pupil's absence from school must be considered as unauthorized until a satisfactory explanation is forthcoming from the parents. Parents will be informed promptly of any concerns that may arise over a child's attendance. At the end of each term the school will write to parents whose child's attendance is a cause for congratulation or concern. If possible, parents should avoid making medical/dental appointments for their child during school hours. Parents whose first language is not English, or who have literacy difficulties, will be offered appropriate support from the school in matters of communication.
School
Staff will endeavour to encourage good attendance and punctuality through personal example. Staff will respond to all absenteeism firmly and consistently. ACADEMIC PROGRESS - COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
The evaluation and assessment of children's academic and general progress is an integral part of the child's life in school. The communication of this information takes the following forms: a. Parent's Evenings During each semester parents will be invited to attend a parent's evening. Here parents can meet with teachers and discuss their child's progress and work. b. Student Reports Parents will receive a written report of their child's progress four times during the year. These will be taken home at the end of each semester and just before the end of school year in late May or early June. Reports will outline the pupil's progress in all areas of the curriculum and are written by the teacher responsible. c. Individual Appointments Parents are able to make an appointment to see a member of staff at any time during the school year to discuss the progress of their child if they feel it is necessary.
INFORMATION TO PARENTS
a. Parent's Handbook A paper publication containing all relevant information about the school is available to new parents from the school office. b. Letters Letters to parents are sent out as need arises by class teacher and the Principal. c. School Website Teachers and pupils update the school web site regularly. All information of general interest about the school is included in this site. Personal information such as names and address or photos is not published on the site without the consent of the parents or the teachers concerned. g. School Calendar A detailed school calendar listing all planned events and holidays is published each year and given to all pupils of UEIS.
INFORMATION FROM PARENTS
The school should be notified immediately in writing of any change of address, contact numbers or emergency contact person.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Our school was the result of parental initiative and we therefore warmly welcome parental involvement in our school. Parents can help in a variety of ways, for example, by assisting on a school excursion, helping in the library or running extracurricular activity. If you would like to help we would love to hear from you. a .Parent / Teacher Association Parents are also most welcome to become involved in helping the school and the children through the medium of the Parents Teacher Association (PTA).
HEALTH
The health and safety of each child is of paramount importance to the school. However, accidents may occasionally occur or children may be unwell during the school day. In either event every effort will be made to ensure that parents are notified immediately. The emergency contact numbers provided by parents used to notify parents or their nominated representative. General If your child has any allergies or suffers from any condition such as asthma, please ensure you discuss this directly with the class teacher. Medication School policy does not allow school staff to dispense medicine to pupils without written consent from the parents. Any medicine coming into school must also be dearly labeled with the child's name and prescribed dosage. No responsibility can be accepted if a dose is missed. Asthma inhalers must be marked with the child's name and handed to the class teacher for safekeeping. Illness Pupils who are obviously not well, who have sickness or diarrhea or who have a fever should not be sent to school. In the case of communicable disease the school should be notified immediately, so that other parents can be informed.
FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
The school will administer whatever first aid measures seem necessary if a child is sick or injured at school. The school will then telephone the parents to have them proceed with any further treatment needed. If neither parent nor parent's emergency contact person can be contacted, the school will proceed with whatever measures seem necessary. a. Fire Drills There are regular fire drills to ensure safety in the event of a real emergency. Teachers and children are made aware of location of fire extinguisher at the school, the alarm system, the means of evacuating the building and of course the need of calm and quiet at all times. After evacuating the building children will line up with their teacher and the register will be called. Fire drills will be held at least once per semester.
